The First Teacher Training School in CLIL NetLE: Putting Cognitive Discourse Functions into Practice, held between 25-27 September, 2024, in ICLON, Leiden University, proved to be a positive and fruitful event in three main ways:

First of all, the topic of Cognitive Discourse Functions (CDFs) was an excellent choice because it served as a bridge between language and content trainees.

Second, the structure of the training school was very coherent:

-Day 1: training on Cognitive Discourse Functions by trainers who were language, science and history specialists. This was followed by the preparation of tools on CDFs to be used at a bilingual school the next day: observation sheets, activities in different subject areas, and interviews with teachers, students and school administrators.

-Day 2: Visit to the Wolfert bilingual school in Rotterdam, where the tools and activities prepared by the trainees in day 1 were put into practice.

-Day 3: The tools were revisited based on the data/information collected from the school.

Third, specific outcomes (interviews with stakeholders, specific content and language integrated activities in different subject areas, and CDF observation sheets) were produced for dissemination and as examples of good practice for Working Group 5.

Good job, CLIL NetLE!

Ana Llinares (Vice chair and co-organiser of the Teacher Training School)
