Writing Powerful Learning Objectives for CLIL: Combining Language, Content, Multilingualism, and Digital Literacy for Deeper Disciplinary Learning
This planning guide developed by Craig Neville of Working Group 4 helps teachers design learning intentions that go beyond just 'what we’re learning', by weaving together:
• Curriculum content aims (e.g., science, history, maths)
• Language aims that support thinking, communicating and understanding in the subject
• Multilingual aims to draw on and develop learners’ full linguistic repertoire
• Digital tools that enable learners to create, reflect, and share their learning
The goal is to empower learners to develop multilingual disciplinary literacies—the ability to think, talk, and create in their subject area across languages, supported by meaningful digital tasks. By following the four steps, teachers can plan rich, inclusive and future-ready learning that supports content mastery, language development, and plurilingual engagement—all through digital means.
